Evaluation

I have evaluated each step for the design cycle such as considering the predicted time table to the actual time. Although it took slightly longer than expected, I was able to finish it in time and with many graphics and text. I used wix; a free website making site that allowed me to create my website. Overall, I believe that I did well during my project but some things that I could have improved is that I could have made more specific descriptions about the text or I could have made another page explaining how to prevent climate change. Also, I could have made my plan more specific so that I would have been able to follow it closer. My website can help many people understand what global warming is and may even change how people think.

Plan

This is the plan that I am going to follow when making my website.

1. Go to Wix; a free website making site.
2. Make your won account.
3. Choose base for your website.
4. Delete all original texts and pictures.
5. Add your own title.
6. Make a second page.
7. Insert text about global warming.
8. Insert pictures about global warming.
9. Add behaviours to enhance objects to go to next/previous page.
10. Save website.

At the end, I will copy the website name and put it in my process journal.

Design

This is my design for my website and powerpoint.

I will chose my wix weblsite design because I think that one page is not enough to explain everything. It will have two pages and will have many pictures to help the reader understand.

Investigation

Problem: How do I effectively communicate online One Global Issues that is facing the world today?

New problem: How do we help prevent climate change from happening?

Design Brief:

To answer this problem, I will write all forms of online communication that can be used to communicate global issues, then, I will present it on a website. I will also explain what these online communication tools can do that can help answer my problem and choose the best to use. I can also use movies or sound recorders not only written words to communicate online. To get as many online communication tools as possible, I can type in the keywords of the problem. I will know if my solution worked if many people are viewing the page or listening to the movie.

Climate Change

I chose climate change for my audacity because I believe that this is the largest problem facing us on Earth today. Climate change, as explained before is responsible for the difference in temperatures in the last few years. This is why I chose climate change.

Global Issues

1. Global warming/ Climate change

Global warming, otherwise known as climate change is one of the most known global issues today. Global warming is known to be responsible for the ice caps melting faster than normal and is caused by smoke and CO2 emissions from cars and factories. Then these chemicals within CO2 emissions are stopped by the atmosphere but prevent the sun heat from leaving the Earth, increasing the heat.

2. Biodiversity and ecosystem losses

Due to climate change, many biodiversity and ecosystems have been lost. One example is the polar caps where the polar bears are losing there homes since the ice is melting. Another example would be where the land is low, due to the rise in sea level, the land would have disappeared where some animals would have been. Therefore, many species have left the face of the Earth.

3. Fisheries depletion

Some countries such as Japan eat a lot of fish. Because of this, these days, the number of fish have decreased and have not been able to catch up to how much the people are eating. Therefore, the price of fish is going up and in many places, people are trying their best to grow as many fishes.

4. Deforestation

In many places in the world, trees are being cut down for paper, for land, for new homes and for the soil and charcoal. This is not good because habitats, biodiversity and aridity of the air is affected. Now, a large part of land which used to be trees have been turned into wastelands by deforestation in the Amazon and many other places.

5. Water deficits

Because of pollution and the increase of population, water shortage is becoming a large problem. Every year, the population is increasing by millions but the amount of water in the world is not increasing. Therefore, people are dying of thirst and running out of towns that no longer have any water in them.

6. The Oceans - Maritime safety and pollution

All oceans are controlled by maritime safety and are also affected by pollution. Maritime safety is the safety of the oceans and the animals inhabiting it. The IMO, part of the United Nations is responsible for maritime safety and preventing pollution from ships. Since ships are a major transportation resource for transporting cargo effectively and safely, the IMO, made a regulation of rules for maritime safety and the prevention of pollution.

7. Poverty - Massive step-up in the fight against poverty

Poverty is now amongst most countries and the gap between the rich and poor is increasing. Many people including kids are living under $1 ~$2 a day. Therefore, they cannot get enough drinking water and diseases spread easily.

8. Education - Education for all

Due to poverty, many kids are unable to go to school and learn. This is because they do not have enough money to go to school and pay for the schoolbooks. In some organizations, people donate money so that they can be educated like everyone else.

9. Diseases - Global infectious diseases

Many diseases have killed many people in human history. Long ago, there was the Black Plague and some time ago and even now, there is HIV and AIDS and other diseases that have killed many especially in countries where poverty is a problem. Today, there is the new H1N1 virus and is spreading all through the world.

10. Natural Disaster prevention and mitigation

There are many natural disasters in the world. To prevent these disasters from happening, you can stop rivers from flooding and you can also be prepared. To have an emergency bag may come in handy when you are in a hurry and can save you a lot of time.

A. How can I make use of established and emerging WWW tools to support online publication?

I can use a variety of established WWW tools to support online publication. To support online publication, I can use facebook, twitter, myspace, youtube or Flickr to help support online publication. This is because you can spread your online publications all through the world in a very short amount of time. Each and every established WWW tools have its own speciality. You can chat to people around the world in facebook, twitter and myspace. In youtube, you can spread your own videos and in Flickr, it is possible to post online photos and share applications.

B. What are the best tools to use for effective communication online?

There are a variety of tools to best use for effective online communication. One of them is facebook. This is beceause you can contact many people online and you can share many online items. Another is myspace where you can also communicate online. There are probably many more good communication tools online, just that I do not know them.

C. How can the Internet be used to help a community solve an environmental issue?

You can go to a search engine to search for articles or look for blogs where people have information on an environmental issue. You can also go to a scientific or official website to gain more reliable information. Another way is to use the news. There are many places where you can get the news but the most known are BBC and CNN. From the news, you can tell what is going on in the world recently concerning environmental issues.

MYP Design Cycle

The design cycle is a way of solving or planning a solution. The design cycle consists of four main parts and other minor parts that help solve your problem. Investigation, plan, create and evaluate. In investigation, you identify the problem, develop the design brief and formulate a design specification. In the plan, you design and plan a product or solution. In the create, you use appropriate techniques and equiptment, follow the plan and create the product or the solution. And finally in evaluate, you evaluate the product or solution and evaluate their use of the design cycle.
